Welcome to the Friends of the Library-Waikoloa Region

An all-volunteer group has formed in Waikoloa to bring a permanent library facility to the Waikoloa region. Our general meetings are open to the public and are held on the second Friday of each month at the Kau Kau Depot next to the Waikoloa Post Office at 7:00 p.m. Our next meeting will be: December 9, 2011. Small donations are encouraged, but not mandatory, to help pay for the electricity we use.

Three Grants Received!

The Hartwell and Rebecca Carter Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation has given us a grant for a literacy program called "Garden of the Mind". It taught children to read different fruits and/or vegetable names and how to grow them. The program lasted 3 weeks and at the end, the children were able to pick the fruits/vegetables they grew and received a free book. Although this program has concluded, the facilitators are planning a harvest celebration for later in the year.

The Atherton Foundation has awarded FL-WR with a grant for the "This I Believe - Waikoloa Region" program. This program is based on a 1950s radio program by Edward R. Murrow. The website thisibelieve.org describes this as a program that "engages youth and adults from all walks of life in writing, sharing, and discussing brief essays about the core values that guide their daily lives." See the new page for all the information on guidelines & how to submit your essay.

The Friends of the Library - Hawaii awarded us a grant in order to build two pergolas with picnic tables outside the bookmobile for people to gather, read and talk story. Shade cloth was added across the tops of each pergola and between the two pergolas. Many thanks go to the apprentices of the local Carpenter's Union for building the pergolas & picnic tables.
